Reduced tillage and cover crops slash soil erosion in Greek cotton fields.
Reduced tillage methods and cover crops can help prevent soil erosion in sloping cotton fields in Greece. Ploughing increases soil loss, but using a cover crop significantly reduces these losses. Soil erosion is three times higher without a cover crop compared to with one. Rain intensity affects soil loss, with ploughed plots having higher clay content in the sediment. Using reduced tillage to the contour with a cover crop can keep soil loss under the accepted rate of 1 ton per hectare per year.
