Weed invasion threatens global rice production, new methods urgently needed!
Direct-seeding of rice has become popular in many countries due to lower costs, but it leads to more weed competition. Weeds like Echinochloa spp. and Cyperus difformis are common in direct-seeded rice fields. "Weedy" rice, similar to cultivated rice but with undesirable traits, is a threat to rice production. To control weeds, methods like tillage, choosing competitive rice varieties, using herbicides, and managing water are important. Herbicides are a key tool, but hand weeding is also common in many countries. Genetically modified rice that is resistant to herbicides could be a future solution for weed control.
