Deadly bacteria threatens olive trees in Mediterranean, sparking agricultural crisis.
Olive trees in Italy are suffering from a disease called olive rapid decline complex, causing leaf scorch and plant dieback. Three new fungi were found to be infecting the trees, including one never seen before in olives. The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa was also discovered in affected trees, which is a known threat in Europe. This bacterium had not spread in the Mediterranean region before due to the lack of a carrier, but now it seems to have found one.
