Toxic Streams Threaten Atlanta's Urban Communities, Exposing Residents to Dangerous Pollutants
A study in Atlanta, Georgia looked at how urbanization affects stream water quality. Researchers monitored 21 stations from 2003 to 2007, finding higher levels of pollutants compared to nearby streams. Fecal coliform bacteria exceeded water quality standards, likely from various sources like sewer overflows and deicing salts. One stream had low pH and high metals from an alum-manufacturing plant. Trace metals from impervious surfaces also exceeded standards. The study used manual and real-time monitoring to track water quality changes in urban streams.
