Romania's Protected Areas Network Fails to Fully Conserve Biodiversity
Romania has increased its protected areas to cover almost 20% of the country, focusing on species and habitats of European concern. However, many regions are still not well represented, especially plants and invertebrates. The conservation planning did not involve local communities or prioritize areas effectively. The administrative bodies are understaffed and underfunded, leading to poor enforcement of conservation goals. To better protect biodiversity, a regional approach based on scientific evidence and community involvement is needed.
