Sugarcane Waste Transformed into Renewable Fuel, Boosting Sustainability
Alkaline peroxide treatments were tested on sugarcane bagasse to break down its components. Comparing NaOH-H2O2 and Ca(OH)2 pretreatments, the best results were seen at 80°C for 3 hours with 1% H2O2. NaOH-H2O2 solubilized 69.5% hemicellulose and removed 75.8% lignin while keeping 59.2% cellulose. Ca(OH)2-H2O2 solubilized 66.6% hemicellulose, removed 65.4% lignin, and retained 50.3% cellulose. Both methods are effective for breaking down the sugarcane bagasse, but NaOH-H2O2 is more efficient than Ca(OH)2-H2O2.
