Newly Discovered Prokaryote Uses Unique Chlorophyll for Enhanced Light Absorption.
A new type of tiny plant-like organism was discovered that uses a unique pigment called chlorophyll d for photosynthesis instead of the usual chlorophyll a. This pigment absorbs red light, unlike chlorophyll a which absorbs green light. The organism also contains other pigments like zeaxanthin and a-carotene. Chlorophyll d makes up more than 2% of the organism's weight, while chlorophyll a is less than 0.1%. This suggests that this organism has a different way of using light for energy compared to other plants.
