Soil carbon levels plummet in cultivated lands, threatening food security.
The study looked at soil organic carbon in black soil under different land uses in northeastern China. They found that undisturbed land had higher organic carbon content than cultivated land. Meadow land had the highest organic carbon in the topsoil. As you go deeper into the soil, organic carbon content decreases. Cropland at the bottom of slopes and waterlogged areas had the highest organic carbon density.
