Glass Dissolves Faster in Acidic Solutions, Revealing Environmental Concerns.
The researchers studied how different types of glass dissolve in water with varying acidity levels. They found that the rate of dissolution increased as the pH of the solution increased from 4 to 9. The type of glass and the openness of its surface affected how quickly it dissolved. The amount of silica in the water increased at pH levels above 8, but this didn't directly relate to the dissolution rate. The researchers also noted that the temperature needed for the glass to dissolve remained fairly constant for Pyrex borosilicate glass, but decreased slightly for soda-lime glasses as the pH increased.
