Whole-genome duplications lead to similar functions but diverse expressions in genes.
Gene duplications in yeast can happen on a large scale or a small scale. The study looked at how these different types of duplications affect gene function. They found that genes duplicated on a large scale are more likely to have similar functions and partners compared to genes duplicated on a small scale. Large-scale duplicates also show differences in gene expression and regulation. This suggests that genes duplicated through different mechanisms can evolve in different ways.
