The article discusses how current Product Data Management (PDM) systems mainly focus on mechanical engineering, but there is a growing need for them to also cover systems engineering aspects, especially in industries like aerospace. The researchers suggest using STEP ISO 10303 - AP233 to integrate systems engineering needs into PDM systems more efficiently. They created a framework for a systems engineering PDM system and built a demonstrator using AP233 interfaces for systems engineering tools connected to a PDM system.
