Shifting Shorelines: Uncovering Causes of Erosional Hot Spots on Beaches
Beach erosion is a common problem, and a study looked at why some areas erode faster than others after beach restoration. They found that nearshore reefs didn't cause the erosion hot spots, but borrow areas did affect wave patterns. Differences in sand size along the beach didn't explain the erosion either. The main cause of faster erosion in certain areas was the change in shoreline orientation, which increased the flow of sand along the beach.
