Low survival rates of juvenile Chinook Salmon in San Joaquin River Delta.
Juvenile Chinook Salmon survival in the San Joaquin River Delta was studied in 2009 and 2010. Researchers used acoustic tags to track the fish through two main routes: the San Joaquin River and the Old River. Survival rates were low in 2009, with only 6% making it through the southern Delta. In 2010, survival improved to 56%, with better chances in the Old River route. Overall, survival through the entire Delta was only 5% in 2010. Most fish that survived in the Old River were rescued from water export facilities and transported around the Delta. These low survival rates are concerning and may require new management strategies to help the salmon population recover.
