Habitat quality, not abundance, drives diversity in wintering waterbirds.
Abundance and diversity of wintering waterbirds at Poyang Lake, China were studied to see if more individuals lead to more species. The study used data from 10 lakes and habitat measurements to test this idea. Results showed that good habitat attracts more species and promotes abundance, but abundance does not necessarily lead to more species. In fact, species richness was found to be more closely linked to habitat quality than to abundance. This suggests that the number of different bird species in an area is more influenced by the quality of their habitat rather than just the number of birds present.
