Unprecedented Global Weather Data Unlocks Insights for Climate Monitoring and Forecasting
In the NCEP/NCAR 40-Year Reanalysis Project, scientists worked together to make a record of 40 years of global weather data to help with research and climate tracking. They gathered different types of information, like land and satellite data, and put it into a special system that stays the same for the 1957–96 time period. By using a top-notch computer system and lots of data sources, they produced detailed reports of the atmosphere. The project lets users see quick snapshots of weather fields from the past, like temperature and winds, which can help them understand Earth's climate better. The team also created forecasts every 5 days, which can help predict future weather patterns. This big task of analyzing 40 years of weather should be finished in early 1997.
