Farmed wetlands vital for bird species survival, rapid assessment techniques ineffective.
Farmed playa wetlands in Kansas are important habitats for many bird species, with 36 different types of birds observed there. Two rapid assessment techniques were used to evaluate these wetlands, but they rated them poorly due to their physical characteristics. In contrast, only 5 bird species were seen in upland areas, none of which depended on wetlands. This shows that farmed playa wetlands are valuable for bird habitats, even though the rapid assessment techniques used were not effective for assessing them in Kansas.
