Ancient Sandstone Reveals Secrets of Nigeria's Past Environments and Geography
The researchers studied the Amaseri Sandstones in Nigeria to understand how they were formed. They looked at different types of sandstone and the environments they were deposited in. They found that the sandstones were likely formed by debris flows and turbidity currents. The sediments were not transported far, coming from nearby areas like the Calabar Flank and Oban Massif. The direction of the flows was mainly northwest and southwest. The presence of limestone cobble/boulders suggests they may have come from the Mfamosing Limestone. This study helps us understand the ancient environments and geography of the region.
