Coldwater stream health linked to fish species shift due to degradation.
A new index was created to assess the health of fish in small coldwater streams in Vermont. The researchers tested different measures on streams with varying levels of disturbance, like habitat damage and acid mine drainage. They found that six specific metrics were effective in showing how the fish populations changed in response to stream degradation. In healthier streams, there were more brook trout and slimy sculpin, while degraded streams had more minnows and suckers.
