Turning sewage sludge into organic fertilizer for greener landscapes!
Wastewater sludge from sewage treatment plants can be turned into eco-friendly fertilizer after UV treatment. A study analyzed sewage sludge from Islamabad Capital Territory STP to see if it could be used as organic fertilizer. The sludge had high levels of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous, but also harmful bacteria like coliforms and E. coli. After exposure to sunlight for 6 months, the levels of harmful bacteria decreased, making the sludge safer for use in green spaces and some limited agricultural purposes. The study showed that treated sewage sludge can be a beneficial resource for the environment.
