Recreational and commercial fisheries coexist peacefully for Lake Superior whitefish.
The study compared recreational and commercial fishing for lake whitefish in Lake Superior from 1997 to 2004. The researchers found that the two types of fishing were mostly separate due to differences in timing, fishing depths, and fish sizes. Commercial fishing methods did not harm each other, and lake whitefish stocks were generally not overfished during the study period. Catch quotas were not exceeded, indicating little conflict between recreational and commercial fishing for lake whitefish.
