Mass extinctions and large volcanic eruptions are connected. Scientists studied how these eruptions affected the climate during five extinction events. They found that the amount of lava doesn't directly relate to how severe the extinctions were. This is because there was enough time between eruptions for the environment to recover. Instead, the damage to the environment and climate from these eruptions must have had other causes.
