Wetlands in Siberia drying up due to urban development and climate change.
Siberian peatlands in western Siberia were studied to understand the climate changes over the past 1300 years. The researchers looked at pollen, plant remains, and charcoal to see how vegetation and fires have changed. They found that the area was wet until the Little Ice Age, when it became dry. This dry period matches findings from other parts of Europe. There was a big increase in fires between 1975 and 1990, possibly due to the growth of a nearby city and changes in the Arctic climate.
