New model reveals severe drought vulnerability in Iran, impacting majority.
The study analyzed drought patterns in Iran using the Percent of Normal Precipitation Index (PNPI). By studying data from 40 stations between 1967-2009, a new model for assessing drought vulnerability was created. The model considered factors like severity of drought, trend, and consecutive dry years to classify areas into different levels of drought hazard. The final vulnerability map showed that severe drought hazard areas cover 58% of the country, mainly in the northwestern, southeastern, and central regions.
