Irrigating with Wastewater Alters Soil Properties, Poses Environmental Risks.
Irrigating soil with wastewater can affect its properties. A study looked at how nine years of using wastewater from a treatment plant in North Isfahan affected soil. Different types of wastewater were compared to well water. The results showed that the raw wastewater had higher levels of certain substances than recommended for irrigation. However, it had lower levels of other substances compared to well water. The soil irrigated with wastewater had lower density, more moisture, and less infiltration than soil not irrigated with wastewater. Overall, there were no significant differences among the different types of wastewater in terms of their effects on the soil.
