Girls' math abilities underestimated due to stereotypes, impacting educational outcomes.
The study looked at how information about stereotypes affects student teachers' views on girls' and boys' math abilities. They gave 156 student teachers questionnaires with different information about stereotype threat. The results showed that boys were seen as better at math than girls, and the information about stereotype threat didn't change participants' attitudes. This research highlights that stereotypes exist about girls' math abilities, leading to lower expectations for them. It suggests that teachers should be educated about stereotype threat.
