Communal Land Use Planning Transforms Albanian Landscapes, Preserves Fertile Farmland
This article presents a case study using GIS for land use planning in a commune in Albania. The researchers collected data on soil characteristics, land suitability for agriculture, and changes in land use over time. They found that most agricultural land is suitable for irrigable agriculture, with a large portion classified in the highest suitability classes. The study also revealed that a significant amount of arable land and orchards have been converted to fallow land or non-agricultural use since 1991. The results show that a portion of agricultural land has been urbanized, with new buildings occupying some of the best agricultural land. The study demonstrates the potential of GIS for effective land use planning in communal areas.
