Intercropping barley and chickpea boosts crop yields and suppresses weeds!
Intercropping barley and chickpea can help control weeds and boost crop production. A study compared these crops grown alone and together, finding that intercropping reduced weed biomass and density compared to sole crops, especially chickpea alone. The best weed control and highest yields were seen in the intercropped plots with a mix of chickpea and barley. The combination of chickpea and barley together resulted in higher biological and grain yields for both crops. The land equivalent ratio (LER) was greater than one for all crop combinations, indicating that intercropping was more efficient in terms of land use.
