Revolutionizing Steel Railway Bridges with Ultra-High Performance Concrete Decks!
Old steel railway bridges not designed for modern trains can be strengthened by adding a new concrete deck above the existing structure. This method raises the center of gravity, allowing the bridge to handle heavier loads. The concrete deck also stiffens the upper steel flange, improving stability. A study on rehabilitating a 1893 steel bridge in Croatia showed success in replacing the old structure with a new ultra-high performance concrete deck, making it capable of meeting current safety standards.
