Cover crops reduce soil nitrate content and improve soil quality.
Cover crops like rye and common vetch can improve soil quality in sustainable agriculture. A study in Iran compared these cover crops planted alone or together. Rye reduced soil nitrate levels, while common vetch lowered electrical conductivity. Planting cover crops until March improved soil quality. April planting led to lower organic matter and higher electrical conductivity. Soil physical characteristics were not affected by the cover crops, but planting until April reduced soil porosity.
