New Forest Carbon Accounting Empowers Local Governments to Manage Climate Impact
The way we measure carbon in forests is changing. A new system is being introduced to track forest carbon for the EPA's Greenhouse Gas Inventory. This system integrates Forest Service data into national and state-level carbon estimates. But there's still a need for more detailed information on a smaller scale, like in National Forest planning and local government requests. The quality and amount of forest data collected in the U.S. varies between regions and over time. By using a more consistent forest inventory system, we can better measure carbon in different areas and improve accuracy. This new approach opens up opportunities to overcome challenges in estimating carbon in forests.
