The type of humus in soils in northern Karnataka depends on the soil type and climate. Lateritic soil has fulvate humus, while forest and black soils have humate-fulvate or humate humus. Lateritic soil lacks a certain humus fraction, black soil lacks another, but forest soil has both. Climate strongly influences the nature and composition of humus in these soils.
