New study reveals how flood plains development impacts soil formation rates.
The article looks at how soil forms in flood plains of rivers in Eastern Europe. By studying deposits and buried soils, researchers found that different rates of accumulation lead to different types of soil formation. When accumulation is fast, soil doesn't change much. Slower accumulation leads to soils mixing with alluvium, then to layered soils, and finally to well-developed meadow soils. This helps us understand how flood plains develop over time.
