Women in African Politics: Presence Without Power, Seeking Transformational Change
Gender equality in African political governance is crucial, but progress has been slow despite the establishment of gender-focused structures. Simply having women in political institutions doesn't guarantee their power and influence. Some countries like Kenya have found alternative ways for women to participate in governance. The failure of gender machineries and mainstreaming efforts shows that there are deep-rooted obstacles in the governance system preventing gender equality. Women's lack of decision-making power violates principles of justice and equality, questioning the legitimacy of democratic governance in African states.
