Climate change impacting plant diversity in Mopaneveld regions of Southern Africa.
The article compares different types of Mopaneveld vegetation in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. By combining data from multiple studies, researchers identified seven vegetation types and ten plant communities using a method called TWINSAP. Despite geographical and climatic differences, there were similarities in plant species. The region near Soutpansberg in South Africa had the highest species richness, while Kaokoland in Namibia had the lowest. Variations in species richness were linked to irregular rainfall patterns. The study suggests that different vegetation states are influenced by rainfall events in semi-arid Mopaneveld areas.
