New drainage system slashes water salinity, revolutionizing agricultural sustainability.
Subsurface drainage systems can impact water quality and salinity. A new design called Multi-Level Drainage System combines shallow, closely spaced drains with deeper, widely spaced drains to reduce offsite impacts while preventing waterlogging and salinity in plant roots. Field studies show that shallow drains have much lower salinity levels than deep drains. By considering water quality in drainage design, we can create more environmentally friendly drainage systems.
