Tropical river basin sees significant decrease in sediment transport, impacting ecosystem.
The study analyzed sediment yield in the Pamba river basin in Kerala. Data from 1986-2006 showed decreasing water and sediment transport. The average annual discharge is 3,838.6 MCM, with a sediment load of 135,427 tons. Sediment yield is low at 79 tons/km2. Monsoons contribute most to discharge and sediment load. The NE monsoon affects sediment production. Rainfall events create a clockwise loop in the discharge-sediment relationship.
