New transmission technology boosts vehicle power and efficiency for smoother rides.
A new type of transmission system called a continuously variable power split transmission (CVPST) has been developed for vehicles. This system combines a V-belt CVT with a planetary gear train to increase torque capacity and efficiency. By using this technology, the power flowing through the belt at low speeds is less than 50 percent. The CVPST allows for better performance in vehicles with large engines. Researchers have created a computer program to design and simulate the acceleration of vehicles equipped with this new transmission system, showing improved performance compared to standard transmissions.
