The article compares attitudes towards inequality in Central and Eastern Europe and Western countries at the end of the 1990s. People in CEE show more support for government redistribution and dislike income differences more than those in the West. Despite valuing meritocratic principles like effort and education, many in CEE believe income differences don't reflect merit, leading to concerns about inequality.
