Alpine lakes at risk of acidification, sensitive organisms in danger.
High-mountain lakes in the Central Alps were studied to see how acid rain affects them. Many lakes are sensitive to acidification, especially those with low alkalinity levels. A model showed that reducing acid deposition by 20% could make 80% of lakes safer for sensitive organisms. A 50% reduction could help 75-80% of lakes reach a critical safe alkalinity level. Acid rain is a big concern for Alpine lakes, but reducing emissions could help protect them.
