Climate change slashes maize profits by 8% in 2012, study finds.
Environmental conditions affect how well crops grow. A study compared maize production in 2011 and 2012 on 69 farms in Serbia. In 2012, less rain and higher temperatures led to lower maize yields. Despite a 37% increase in maize price, total production value decreased by 1%. Costs went up by 6%, resulting in an 8% decrease in profits. The study used gross margin, a measure of profit, to show how different environmental conditions can impact crop production.
