Gulf of Mexico Coastline Erosion Threatens Communities and Infrastructure
Beach erosion is a common problem in the United States, especially along the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Geological Survey is studying historical shoreline changes in this region to understand past trends and rates of erosion. By comparing old shorelines from the 1800s, 1920s-1930s, and 1970s with recent data from lidar surveys, they found that erosion rates are highest in Louisiana near the Mississippi delta. Texas and Mississippi also experience rapid erosion, while Florida sees localized erosion around tidal inlets. This research aims to provide consistent and systematic updates on coastal erosion to help communities better respond to the changing shoreline.
