Malawi Farmers Boost Maize Yields by Optimizing Planting Timing and Fertilizer Use
Maize yields in Malawi were studied over six years with different levels of nitrogen and planting times. High rainfall at the start of the season reduced yields on one soil type, while late silking and total season rainfall affected both soils. More nitrogen lessened the negative effects of rainfall on yield. Delaying planting by three weeks sometimes increased or decreased yield. The reasons for these effects are discussed.
