New Chickpea Hybrids Show High Yield Potential and Improved Breeding Methods.
The researchers evaluated 25 chickpea hybrids to see which ones were high yielding. They found that some hybrids had better performance than others, with the top five hybrids standing out. They also discovered that when a hybrid had high seed yield, it often had low 100-seed weight. Inbreeding depression was observed in hybrids with high heterosis. The genetic makeup of the parents influenced the hybrid's performance, with some poor combiners still producing good hybrids. By looking at heterotic response, inbreeding depression, and genetic effects of the parents, researchers can identify which crosses are likely to produce better pure lines through breeding methods.
