Fertilized sea urchin eggs can accept more sperm after initial fertilization, leading to heavy polyspermy. Re-fertilization is more successful with earlier insemination. Trypsin or papain treatment allows for re-fertilization without further steps. The results suggest the presence of sperm receptors on the egg surface.
