Islands in Northern Melanesia Urgently Need Conservation Action for Mammals
The researchers studied the mammals of northern Melanesia to understand their distribution and diversity. They looked at 75 islands in the region and found that island size and isolation were key factors influencing mammal species richness. The Solomon Islands stood out for having a high number of unique mammal species. The study showed that some islands need more surveys to protect their mammal populations, and highlighted areas where conservation efforts should be focused to prevent species from going extinct.
