NAFTA's Protectionist Loopholes Undermine Free Trade, Impacting Millions
The NAFTA trade deal, between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, opened up trade for most goods but left certain sectors with protectionist rules. This paper looked at these "outlier sectors" and why they still have restrictions. Some sectors are protected by producers who benefit from the rules, while others are shielded by the governments themselves. By categorizing these sectors, the study uncovered patterns in why protectionism exists in certain areas under NAFTA.
