Integrated potassium management boosts crop residue quality for animal feeding.
The researchers conducted a field experiment to see how adding potassium to crops like maize and wheat affects the amount and quality of crop residues used for animal feed. They found that adding potassium significantly increased crop residue yield in maize, with the best results seen when using a combination of muriate of potash and farmyard manure. This combination also enriched the crop residues with important nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and iron. However, in wheat, the different potassium treatments did not show a significant difference in crop residue yields. Overall, adding potassium to crops can improve the quantity and quality of crop residues used for animal feeding in a maize-wheat cropping system.
