Herbicides and Tillage Practices Shift Weed Seedbank Composition Rapidly
The type of crops grown and how they are managed can affect the types of weeds that grow in the soil. Researchers studied how different types of tillage, herbicides, and crop rotations influenced the weed seedbank in three different crop sequences over three years. They found that the type of crops grown had the biggest impact on the types of weeds present in the soil. Herbicides used in each crop sequence favored weeds that were less affected by the herbicides. Chisel plowing led to more weed seeds near the soil surface compared to moldboard plowing. Effective weed control helped reduce the number of weed seeds in the soil. Row cultivation also helped reduce weed seed numbers in some crop sequences. Overall, the way crops are managed can greatly influence the types and numbers of weeds in the soil.
