Rich biodiversity in cocoa agroforests boosts income potential in Cameroon.
The study aimed to understand how the diversity of plant species in cocoa-based agroforests in Central Cameroon changes with the age of the agroforests. Researchers inventoried plant species in agroforests of different ages and found a total of 4,058 trees belonging to 145 plant species and 41 families. Young cocoa plantations had 889 trees, 54 species, and 31 families, while older plantations had more trees, species, and families. The diverse plant life in these agroforests provides shade, food, and potential income. The researchers suggest further studying the tree canopy and using these findings to improve cocoa farming methods.
