Intercropping maize with beans boosts yields, profits, and energy efficiency!
Intercropping maize with runner bean in a 2:2 row ratio resulted in the highest yield, efficiency, and profits in a study conducted in Orissa. This method increased maize-equivalent yield by 114.5% and net profit by Rs 10,711/ha compared to sole maize planting. Maize + runner bean intercropping system was found to be the most productive, economically viable, and energy-efficient approach, followed by maize + cowpea at a 1:1 row ratio. This research shows that intercropping can significantly improve productivity, profitability, and energy efficiency in maize cultivation.
